Krabi Long-Tail Boat Rental Guide 2026: Routes, Prices and Travel Tips

Krabi is one of southern Thailand’s most impressive coastal destinations, famous for turquoise water, white-sand beaches and dramatic limestone cliffs. One of the best ways to explore its surrounding islands is by renting a private long-tail boat, Thailand’s iconic wooden vessel seen in countless travel photos.

Private long-tail tours offer more flexibility than shared excursions. You can travel with your own group, spend more time at your favourite locations and choose between short, half-day and full-day programs. Most private tours accommodate small groups, although capacity depends on the boat.

What Is a Long-Tail Boat?

Known in Thai as ruea hang yao, the long-tail boat takes its name from the extended propeller shaft behind the vessel. Tourist boats are commonly built with narrow wooden hulls measuring approximately 8–12 metres, although dimensions vary considerably.

Unlike modern boats with enclosed marine engines, traditional long-tails normally have an exposed automotive or agricultural engine mounted at the stern. Power is transferred directly to the propeller through a long metal shaft. The captain steers by moving the engine and shaft assembly, changing the direction of the thrust.

This simple system is easy for local mechanics to maintain and allows the propeller to be lifted in shallow water. Long-tails can therefore approach beaches and small islands without a large pier. Their disadvantages are engine noise, vibration and slower travel compared with speedboats.

Long-Tail Boat Rental Options

Krabi long-tail boats are usually available for short private trips, half-day tours of around four to six hours and full-day charters.

A short two or three-hour rental is suitable if you want to visit one nearby island. Half-day tours normally follow either the Four Islands or Hong Island route. It may be possible to combine both routes in one full day, but this creates a busy schedule and reduces the time available at each stop.

Option 1: Krabi Four Islands Tour

The classic Four Islands route is suitable for first-time visitors and usually includes:

Chicken Island

Cruise past the famous chicken-head-shaped rock formation. Depending on sea conditions, the boat may stop nearby for snorkeling and sightseeing.

Tup Island

Swim in shallow turquoise water and relax on the beach. During suitable tides, a natural sandbar may appear between Tup and the neighbouring islands.

Poda Island

Enjoy Poda Island’s white-sand beach, swim beneath its impressive limestone scenery or arrange a private picnic. It is also one of Krabi’s best locations for long-tail boat photographs.

Phra Nang Cave Beach

Visit this beautiful beach near Railay, surrounded by cliffs and clear water. Guests can explore the cave area, swim or relax while enjoying the coastline.

Option 2: Hong Island Tour

The Hong Island route offers lagoons, limestone formations and peaceful island scenery.

Hong Island

Relax on the beach, swim, snorkel or use a paddleboard when included in your package and conditions are safe.

Hong Lagoon

Enter a hidden lagoon surrounded by towering cliffs. Access and water depth depend on the tide, so the captain may adjust the timing.

Lao Lading Island

Visit a smaller island known for its tropical scenery and quiet beach. Activities may include swimming, snorkeling and relaxing by the sea.

Long-Tail Boat Prices in Krabi

Prices depend on the route, duration, group size, boat quality and included services. Approximate private rates for up to four guests are:

  • Short two or three-hour trip: from 3,000 THB

  • Four Islands private tour: 5,000–7,000 THB

  • Hong Island private tour: 6,000–8,000 THB

  • Combined Four Islands and Hong route: 10,000–12,000 THB

Luxury boats with cushioned seating, fruit, drinks, picnic meals, towels, paddleboards or special decorations can cost more. Always check whether the advertised price is per person or per boat.

National park fees are often excluded. Foreign visitors may pay approximately 400 THB per adult and 200 THB per child for the Four Islands area, or 300 THB per adult and 150 THB per child for the Hong Islands. Rates can change, so confirm them before departure and carry cash.

Before You Book

Confirm the exact route, duration, passenger capacity and departure point. Check whether hotel transfer, fuel, insurance, life jackets, snorkeling equipment, food and park fees are included.

Bring swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, a waterproof phone case and cash. Early-morning tours can help you avoid crowds, while afternoon programs are better for softer light and sunset photographs. Sandbars and lagoon access depend on tides, and routes may change because of wind or sea conditions.

Tripkolic allows travellers to compare traditional and luxury long-tail boats from different local suppliers, contact sellers about private routes and book short, half-day or full-day experiences. With the right boat and itinerary, a private long-tail tour can become one of the most memorable experiences of your Krabi holiday.
