Koh Phangan is not only known for its beaches and island lifestyle. It also has a surprisingly large Muay Thai training community, with traditional local gyms, modern martial arts academies, private training, fight camps and long-term training programs.
Whether you have never worn boxing gloves before or already have Muay Thai experience, it is possible to join a single class during your holiday or train several times per week.
A single group Muay Thai class at many established Koh Phangan gyms currently costs around 300-450 THB.
Jomhod Muay Thai offers a single group session for 300 THB. Chinnarach Muay Thai, M19 Muay Thai and Venom Muay Thai publish single-class prices of 400 THB. Diamond Muay Thai charges 400 THB after a discounted first session, while Martial Arts Academy Koh Phangan lists a Muay Thai drop-in class at 450 THB.
Private training is also widely available. Published one-hour private rates include approximately 600 THB at Diamond Muay Thai, 800 THB at Chinnarach and Venom, 900 THB at M19 and 1,000 THB at Martial Arts Academy.
Two-hour classes are common on Koh Phangan. Chinnarach, Diamond, M19 and Venom operate morning and afternoon training sessions, commonly around 08:00-10:00 and 16:00-18:00.
Martial Arts Academy uses 90-minute Muay Thai sessions, while private lessons at many gyms last around one hour.
Many of the island's gyms are concentrated around Thong Sala, Ban Tai, Nai Wok and Wok Tum.
Well-established options include Chinnarach Muay Thai, Diamond Muay Thai, Jomhod Muay Thai, Venom Muay Thai, M19 Muay Thai and Martial Arts Academy Koh Phangan.
Other Muay Thai gyms operating on the island include Rittisak Muay Thai, Rajanon Muay Thai Gym, Worawut Muay Thai Gym, Sor Saktai Muay Thai, Yod Khao Muaythai and Phangan Muay Thai.
Each gym has a different training environment. Some focus on traditional group training, while others combine Muay Thai with fitness, private coaching, recovery facilities, accommodation or structured fight preparation.
Yes. Several major Koh Phangan gyms specifically state that complete beginners are welcome.
Beginner sessions commonly include warm-up, shadowboxing, basic punches, kicks, knees and elbows, heavy-bag work and pad training with a trainer. More experienced students may also practice clinching, technical drills and controlled sparring.
Sparring is not automatically required for a beginner. For example, Venom states that sparring is optional for beginners and introduced when the trainer believes the student is ready.
A group class is usually the easiest and lowest-cost choice if you want to try Muay Thai while visiting Koh Phangan.
Private training gives the coach more time to correct your stance, movement and technique. It can be useful both for complete beginners who want personal guidance and experienced practitioners working on specific skills.
For longer stays, many gyms offer weekly, monthly and multi-session packages. Some, including Diamond, Venom and M19, also provide training or accommodation packages.
